What good is marriage?

BF and I considering getting married. We are definitely going to move me and my kids into his house this year. But I'm not sure if it makes sense to make it legal or not. I think for sentimental reasons BF would prefer to get married, so we probably will, but it seems that there are good reasons not to.

I looked at the tax issue and discovered that if we were married our total 2015 federal taxes would be about $1700 higher. (We would be going from Single/Head of Household to Married filing Jointly.) We are past the age where we would consider having children together.

My doctors always ask if I want to assign someone to have access to my medical information, so I don't picture that being an issue.

One thing on the marriage side is that he stands to inherit a large-ish amount of money when his father passes away. My stake in that would be better if we were married. (This is only an issue if we later split up, of course.)

This is all I've really come up with to consider. Are there any real advantages to being married anymore?
