making sense of the study note

Is there any rational for the numbering, order, and cover-page color of the study notes from the SOA? Other than being in increasing order, I can't find much of a pattern.

FA DNMMR Common Mistakes

Hello all,

I just received my DNMMR on my first attempt at the FA and wanted to get a sense of what common mistakes I might be making. I've listed below my initial thoughts on why I DNMMR, and would love any feedback, especially from those that did MMR.

Overall
1. Being too wordy - mine came in around 10k words without tables, so I'm guessing I need to shorten it up and be more concise
2. Be more black and white in my recommendation. I probably put too many caveats and limitations on how applicable my price range was.
3. Went beyond the scope of questions in trying to consider all the risks of each task

Task 1 Specifics
1. Focused too much on frequency of errors as opposed to severity
2. Probably was unreasonable in considering how much it would actually take to fix any data errors

Task 2 Specifics
1. Maybe my range was too aggressive? I had a walkaway point using a risk metric that was at -10%?
2. I thought I did a solid job justifying my performance and risk metric (e.g. why PVP/IR instead of just PVP, why PVP/IR >10% instead of PVP/IR >0%, why CTE instead of VaR or StdDev, why CTE(90) instead of CTE(75) or CTE(95), why CTE(90) > -10% instead of CTE(90) > 0%), but maybe I was too detailed?
3. Maybe too detailed in my risk/reward analysis of pricing. I could have just said higher price = higher profit expectation, but also less likelihood of winning the work
4. Maybe should have just said a high and low price point instead of outlining 5 specific points along that range?

Task 3 Specifics
1. I only tested each assumption at my walkaway point, maybe should have tested it at the high and low ends?
2. I only tested each assumption with an X% and 2X% shock in either direction - maybe it makes more sense to have different shocks for different assumptions?
3. Maybe mention more about interdependence of assumptions? Maybe discuss anti-selection?
4. Have better factors excluded that I think are material? I came up with 3 but maybe that's not enough?

Task 4 Specifics
1. I didn't attempt to quantify the severity or likelihood of my key risks, but mentioned ways that we could do that. Maybe I should try to estimate those?
2. I listed more operational than strategic or financial risks in my RCD - maybe I need a more balanced count?
3. Maybe my key risks were too broad? For example, "Decreased credit usage leading to fewer miles purchased" could instead have been "Increase in penalty rates on CDL cardholders leading to fewer miles earned and a decrease in volume of Air Miles purchased"?

Task 5 Specifics
1. Maybe focusing too much on risk/reward of each policy change and not the risk/reward of implementing it in the model?
2. Should I have focused more on changes to the model and less on why each policy itself should have been changed or not?

Task 6 Specifics
1. Probably too wordy
2. Probably not clear enough of a recommendation (too many caveats on data quality, understanding of current risk appetites, etc.).
3. I'm guessing I should focus more on presenting a strong argument for why my range should be justified and leave out most of the limitations or discussions of limitations on my price range? I don't know what the appropriate balance is between providing a black and white answer and providing the most appropriate and accurate response that adequately discusses the risk associated with this price range?
4. Maybe consolidate my tables more into the report instead of just having them in an appendix at the end?

Task 7 Specifics
1. I made specific recommendations for assumption changes (e.g. Decrease the miles purchased assumption to 12 million miles). Should I have been less specific, and just said "Decrease the miles purchased assumption"?
2. I made mention of updating the model to match final deal structure, maybe this was beyond the scope of the question?

Like I said, any advice or discussion would be helpful (since we don't get any feedback until after the 2nd failed attempt). I'm fairly frustrated with myself, and the SOA for providing no feedback or model solution or anything. Thanks in advance, congratulations to all those who have MMR, and for those who DNMMR - I'll be retaking this on 2/19-2/23 if you want to join!

FA DNMMR Common Mistakes

MCCSR

I am just beginning Togo through the material using MATE. I am adding items to the lists based on the larger summary material and noticed all of the MCCSR mortality formulas are not on there, likely due to it all being factors. was wondering if we need to memorize every factor in this section (mostly GHS 108-14) and if so, is there any kind of "cheat sheet" provided at the seminar or is it worth me creating my own for this topic. Thanks!

MCCSR

Events

I'm going through chapter 2 and I'm having a very difficult time. I will go through the problem, only to find out that my events aren't even the same events shown in the solution manual.

Is there any insight as to go about defining what is an event and what isn't?

Is Global Warming really the worst global threat?

First of all, a predictive decrease in the supply of land of flood-proof land in the future just means that buying and holding high land near coastal areas is a very good longterm investment

Where as, nuclear all out war means no safe haven, as does global pandemic, as does Zika

So is global warming really #1?

percentile matching

Why is it in some questions that ask for percentile matching at a certain percentage based on a set of data points.

For example percentile matching at 90%
from the following numbers 2, 3, 3, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 11, 12 (n numbers)

The solutions use a couple different methods, they either:
1. (.9)n
2. (.9)(n+1)
3. [(.9)n]rounded to the next whole number

what is the rule with when to use each one?

thanks!

I think Google and Yahoo strongly censor what we can search for.

I typed "Do Muslims like Hillary" in quotation marks into Google and Yahoo search. Both said there are zero results and to try it without quotation marks. Do they expect me to believe that no one on the vast internet ever asked that question anywhere? Looks like censorship to me. Without quotes, I get nothing but "Hillary says X about Muslims", but nothing about what they say about her. It is disturbing how every single result title looks the same.

I think Google and Yahoo strongly censor what we can search for.

Personality Test

When given a personality test during interview stage, should I answer in a way that is most accurate to me, or in a way that I think the employer would want me to be? For example, should I strongly agree with any statement that makes me seem like I love working and anything that makes me look like a leader?

Whole Life Reserves

C6 of the Valuation of Life Insurance Liabilities:

Post 1976 method - focus of the summary seems to be deficiency reserves. These occur whenever GP < NP.

Is this NP calculated using the methodology described under CRVM in section 5 or the NLP method?

Are the base product reserves calculated consistent with the methodology used to calculate NP?

Whole Life Reserves

NLP vs CRVM

C5 of the Valuation of Life Insurance Liabilities - I am reading in the ACE manual a note that says the most common methods of Valuation Methodologies are NLP and CRVM.

If the prescribed method for statutory valuation is NLP - then doesn't that make NLP CRVM? I thought CRVM was just whatever the commissioner requires for stat reserves?

How do large companies make money off Super Bowl Commercials?

I mean how is it possible they make more than hundreds of millions in new sales worth paying that much for they ad space?

When the cost per 30-second soundbite is $5-15 million dollars and with 25 between all the breaks and some being 90-second commercials, that's like $300 million on the promise of a few more dollars

How does this pay off exactly? It actually is a profitable investment?

Pick Up Artist video-game

Hey folks! I'm creating a silly game where you go to bars and pick up chicks. Each attempt is a final-fantasy style battle, where you strategically use some basic social skills to convince women that they want to go home with you. It's tricky! because you have to take advantage of your strengths & avoid offending girls & avoid friend zones & other bros & jealousies & exes & previous hookups & STIs & all sorts of dramas.

Anyway I thought I'd ask the actuaries if they have any thoughts to contribute?!

Mahler PE17 Q17

Please could you help with this.

The question says that we have a 2-point mixture dist with 0.6 a SPP(α=3,θ=10) and 0.4 a SPP(α=2,θ=10). We want the Ε( Χ / Χ>20).

I tried to solve it using

Ε( Χ / Χ>20) = 0.6 Ε( Χ / Χ>20) + 0.4 Ε( Χ / Χ>20)
using the formulas for the first conditional moment of a SPP(α=3,θ=10) and for the second of a SPP(α=2,θ=10).
Also I used Ε( Χ / Χ>20) = { E(X) - E(X^20) + 20P(X>20) } / P(X>20)
And using all these end up getting a value of 34 (34 = 0.6 * 30 + 0.4 * 40).
However the right answer is 35.71 and Mahler solves it using calculus. Why is my approach not valid??

Thanks

Spring 16 Core Exam - Lesson #1

Will stocks plunge next week?

4 reasons I think there's downward pressure ahead

Reason 1: What we saw Friday is a normal counter ralley Eventhough the primary moving avg trend is down (we had a moving average crossover between the 50-day and 200-day moving avg for the S&P500 and it's far from being undone). The counter ralley was further exacerbated by end of month mutual funds rebalancing their stock/bond portfolios for the month of January, since stocks plunged for the month. (After a counter ralley and a bear market direction, it's a chance for short-term investors to do some profit taking)

Reason 2: The news that brought on Friday's ralley was in part
BAD economic news US GDP underperformed expectations as did employment growth. The reason it forced a ralley was reduces the Fed's likekiness of hiking rates further. So once speculation is the FED is out of bullets, this will be bad fast.

Reason 3: Japan's negative interest rate decision indicates that most Feds, including ours, have run out of conventional options and once the last straw...negative interest rates fail, and we are in recession...it's going to be unprecedentedly bad

Reason 4: Debt to earnings in US companies is at a 12-year high

Thoughts?

Not to mention energy market is extremely volatile

Extended Warranties and Rescissions

There is a thread on the AO regarding tech companies, insurance, and in particular their extended warranties that reminded me of my experience with Hewlett Packard several years ago. I wondered then whether other people had a problem like mine, but never thought to ask the AO.

Here is part of my letter to HP

"I purchased a laptop with a 3-year warranty in Sept07, and in Oct10 I bought another warranty, for 12 months. This last warranty would normally expire in Oct11. However when I called last week about actual and potential problems with my laptop, I was told that HP has stopped acquisition of replacement parts effective May11 and therefore warranty servicing was impossible. HP is in the process of refunding a prorata portion of the cost of the warranty.

So for this particular warranty you act as follows
- The cost is $15 per month. (It's paid all at once, up front, but that's not really relevant.)
- Up to May11, you provided warranty coverage and product service. The issue is what happens on/after May11.
- For people who do not have a warranty claim, you keep the $ 15 per month.
- For people who do have a claim, you give back the $15 for the month of claim and for any remaining months where you already collected the $15.

This is not really insurance or warranty coverage or anything of the sort...you are just taking money, sometimes keeping it, sometimes giving it back, but never providing the service you promised to provide."

I got no response there, and then tried NY AG and Calif DCA, where I also got no reply. Anyway, this is from my email to them:

"A similar topic, with far greater harm to individual consumers, involved the alleged action of some health insurers with respect to rescissions. You may recall that some insurers issued policies readily, and then were said to rescind policies quickly in the case of those individuals who had large medical expenses. The two circumstances are very similar - in each case, the consumer thinks he has insurance until he has a claim. A premium refund is small consolation."

Has anyone had a similar experience with respect to extended warranties? Or seen other examples of what I would call the “rescission fraud?” I tried some back-of-the-envelope calculations to estimate the profit from this sort of fraud, using vague guesses regarding the number of people who keep their PCs for several years, etc. FWIW, I managed to convince myself that the number is in the $$ multiple millions.

As a sort of odd postscript to my own experience, I received another email from HP in Sept11, described below:

"Finally, I got an email today from HP that just freakin' blows me away. They want to sign me up for another year of warranty "coverage," even though they just refunded 5 months or so of premium for the prior year of 'coverage.'"

Extended Warranties and Rescissions

Deflation

This is kind of political and kind of financial. Probably more financial since most of our country is not sophisticated enough to understand some of the problems with deflation, but does anyone see deflation as a problem to be concerned about right now? I am looking at basically every part of the world's economy except the US (maybe ours too after yesterdays GDP report) slowing down. The bottom has dropped out of almost every commodity market and every time they start to increase they crash back down with massive supply glut reports. Oil is the main one, but most of the metals, coal, natural gas, everything is around 10 year lows. I think China is going to double down on deflating their currency to try to solve their problems which will make their good cheaper here. Population growth in the world is slowing. I guess I see a lot of arrows pointing toward deflation on our horizon. Japan has been dealing with it for a while now and it is basically soul crushing if you have debt or are working in an industry that sells goods. Anyway just wondering if anyone else sees this as a problem or has a solution to the problem?

Do you trust Hillary to defeat ISIS?

She sure talks the talk. With Obama in office, presumably in agreement with her, and with a pro-war republican congress, why hasn't Hillary talked them into defeating ISIS already? Why do we have to vote her in first before she takes any action? I find it hard to believe that superpowers are being pushed around by this group. Something smells fishy, like a pure election ploy.

Thoughts?

IMO, simply letting the Arabs clean up their own mess is not good enough. We should be talking to the stable countries in the area to convince them to help out or not fund ISIS. We should train and light arm the locals who are being attacked. We should provide drone air support. We should cut off recruitment ads and replace them with footage of what those people are doing. I don't think the victims are strong enough to fight ISIS off on their own. Hillary sounds great, but she also sounds like just words, if she won't act until after she is elected.

How challenging do you find your work?

I'm in my first actuarial role and I'm starting to feel that, one, the role is derivative from traditional actuarial roles and, two, the work is not challenging enough. For example, I have not yet worked on pricing, reserving, or modeling in any capacity, nor do my supervisors (there are other departments in the company that do). We mainly provide "actuarial support" for other non-actuarial departments which translates to creating a ton of reporting. I'm starting to hate making reports and am curious about a more traditional actuarial experience. Is pricing/reserving just as boring after the first two years? I've been contemplating getting out of the field, and at the very least, switching jobs. What has your experience been like?

PAK Online Seminar for ERM Spring 2016

Hello all,
I've hijacked some other threads, but I just wanted to take a minute and start a base for the PAK Online Seminar for ERM Spring 2016! I already know many of you on the forum, but I'd like to introduce myself to those I don't.

A little about myself

My name is Paul Peterson, and I've been helping students pass exams for about 3 years now. I passed my exams and got my FSA using PAK, and thought so highly of the material that they provided, that I couldn't wait to start helping get other students through these exams. I started work on the Finance Track (CFE/SDM), focusing on the Online Seminars, and have recently joined Eddy in the fight to help students pass ERM!

The thing I have taken the most pride in over the years is the close relationships I have with the candidates. Please, feel free to email me, PM me, or chat on this forum or the PAK forum, and I promise I will promptly and thoroughly reply; I'd love to help out, clear up any tricky topics, or give advice. I'm confident that the students I have worked with in the past would agree that I will stop at nothing to help you get a passing grade :)

A little about the seminar

The purpose of this seminar is to solidify and enhance your knowledge of the readings, and most importantly, give you the best chance to pass the exam. We will review all of the key concepts, do examples, and discuss how the readings could show up on the exam.

The PAK Online Seminar includes:
  1. Over 70 video lectures to clarify and explain the key concepts/calculations in each syllabus reading (Core + Extension) and past exam questions
  2. Analyze the new case study (e.g. how to answer the case-study-related questions)
  3. Discuss the past exam questions (e.g. exam techniques, how to score)
  4. Contain condensed outlines for each reading on the syllabus
  5. Include practice questions to test your knowledge
  6. Review the lectures and study at your own pace
  7. On-demand video library compatible with smartphones (iPhone, Android, etc), tablets (iPad, Android), and PC/Mac devices.
  8. Email support (ask as many questions as you can think of!)
  9. Free access for 2nd attempt (only for those who scored 2-5)

A little about the exams

Statistically speaking, most students taking the ERM exam are taking it as their first FSA exam. Many are not prepared for the change in difficulty and style compared to the preliminary exams. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
  1. Make a schedule and try to stick to it. You are required to read a lot of material, and falling behind is the surest way to hurt your chances. Try the PAK Suggested Study Schedule for a good guide.

  2. Look at some of the past exams and exam solutions. Don't worry if you don't know the answers yet. Take some time to get familiar with the types of questions you might see.

  3. Practice writing. This might seem like a strange one, but many students are surprised by how hard it is to write for such a long time. Build those muscles!

  4. When in doubt, ask questions. I'm always here to help!

If you have any questions at all (about the exam, about our products, about life in general), please email me at paulpeterson@pakstudymanual.com or talk to me here. And as you are starting to study and think about the exam, always remember, you can do it!

How political is Trump?

Does he really want to change the country how he says, or does he just want to boost his ratings?

Why would a billionaire care about lower class white maybe having to compete with foreigner labor?

Trump has spent only $5 million on his campaign, compared to over $80 million by Jeb Bush. I think he is a troll, and he does not care about our government. If elected, I'm sure he will find ways to make money, if not by having far greater publicity for his show.

He told New Yorkers, including Hillary, that he was very pro-choice. Now he says he just said that because he could get further in business in New York by acting liberal and complimenting the state's senator.

Will you vote for him just for the lolz?

WASHINGTON—The Obama administration plans to require large employers to peel back the curtain on how much they pay men and women in a push to narrow long-standing earning gaps between the genders.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will roll out details of the plan Friday to begin gathering a summary of pay data from employers with 100 or more workers.

The data will be used to identify employers that may be engaging in pay discrimination so that the agency can target its enforcement resources where problems may be likeliest to exist. The proposal would cover more than 63 million U.S. workers, according to the White House.

The plan, which will be open to public comment but won’t require legislative approval, is part of a broad effort undertaken by President Barack Obama and federal agencies to close a persistent wage gap between men and women.

Soon after taking office, he convened a national task force to address the issue, requesting greater coordination among agencies and more aggressive enforcement efforts.
.....
In a 2012 report commissioned by the EEOC to study the feasibility of collecting pay data, independent experts found that the agency at that time didn't have the expertise it needed to analyze the information it hoped to gather from employers.

Ms. Yang said Thursday that the EEOC has been working to increase its capacity. She also said the agency is joining with the Department of Labor to accomplish the aims of the program.

“One of the benefits of us partnering with DOL in this effort is we can join our capacity together in analyzing some of the data and sharing information and resources.”

Ms. Yang said she anticipates completing the rule-making process by September 2016, with employers submitting their pay data for the first time in September 2017.

Serious question here. How is an employer to know the sex of an employee if the concept is fluid? The employer can only ask what sex, if any, each employee identifies as. Not very PC to make such gross assumptions.

SEC Chief: Board Diversity Is a Priority for Agency in 2016
Mary Jo White outlines agenda with initiatives focusing on director diversity, executive compensation

Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Jo White outlined on Tuesday a busy agenda for what is likely to be her final full year at the helm of the SEC, with a range of initiatives focusing on boardroom diversity and executive compensation.

One new priority: possibly requiring companies to provide more details about the diversity of their directors. Ms. White, speaking at a securities conference in Coronado, Calif., said she is concerned that existing disclosures may not provide investors with enough information, according to people who attended the session.

Ms. White said she has instructed staff to review existing company disclosures and give her recommendations on whether the agency should require companies to provide more specific information about the racial or gender composition of their boards, these people said.

Rules adopted in 2009 require companies to disclose whether diversity is considered for management-backed director candidates who appear on corporate ballots. Some investor advocates say companies haven’t provided shareholders with sufficient information about the makeup of their boards, in part because the rules leave it up to the companies to define “diversity.”

perhaps the SOA could piggyback on this stuff.

Multiplication as Repeated Addition, Exponentiation as Repeated Multiplication

I know each of these two things isn't exactly true. But I'm struggling as to how to discuss exponents with my class (early high school, skill level from quite below grade level to at grade level) without at least starting off with the "erroneous" concept.

I don't want to tell these kids untruths, but I do want them to be introduced to this concept in a way they can handle.

Any thoughts? Is it better if I at least say "exponentiation can be usefully thought of as repeated addition", and toss in a little disclaimer?

This spring, DC Comics will revamp dozens of classic Hanna-Barbera animated series as part of a new line, updating the likes of Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, and The Flintstones for more contemporary tastes. Fans of the originals, brace yourselves though -- some of the new takes on the characters are radical departures.

DC Comics
Perhaps the strangest update is the new Scooby-Doo. In Scooby Apocalypse, the familiar gang of meddling kids -- Freddie, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy and, of course, Scooby-Doo himself -- are reimagined as the only group able to put right an experiment gone horribly wrong. There are no eccentric loners in horror masks here -- instead the group are facing "a world full of mutated creatures infected by a nanite virus that enhances their fears, terrors and baser instincts."

...do they at least say "if it wasn't for you meddling kids..."

Internet Culture These Days

I don't like when newscasts or morning talk shows talk about internet memes. Like ever. Or talk about who tweeted what, how many likes/shares some random pointless thing got. You can tell the people who just figured out acronyms like ROFL and still use them despite faster input methods making them largely obsolete.

My mom figured out emojis and can't text anymore without including at least two. I never used them myself.

I remember when social movements weren't branded by hashtags.

And no, I will not follow my box of snack crackers on Pinterest.

Just stop it already.

I miss the old, pioneering, sort of underground internet.

Spring 2016 Case Study

Any idea on about when this will be posted? Seems to be a disadvantage to sitting for this exam in the Spring. Something I wasn't aware of until after I signed up and purchased everything. :viola:

Spring 2016 Case Study

What would you do if everyone you cared about died?

Okay so this question is going to make me sound like a psychopath wishing death on everyone. So keep in mind that I greatly appreciate all the relationships and connections I have in my life and it would suck enormously if I lost any of them let alone all of them.

However, if I put aside the grief and loss, I would probably live my life very differently. I would care considerably less about money, probably quitting my job. I would spend significant amounts of time wandering the world, traveling, hiking. When I say "significant" I mean months at a time away from anyone I know. After wandering for a while I would move to a Scandinavian country.

What would you do, and am I crazy for having a fantasy like this?

Reserves for UL Type B

I am having trouble grasping (at a high-level) the minimum required/statutory reserves for a Type B UL policy (death benefit = AV + Face amount).

I'm in Pension so I don't have practical experience with this. I've researched this thoroughly and just get more confused (terms such as basic reserves, net premiums, net single premiums, etc). I even read through the actuarial guideline on it and the calculation for reserve seems EXTREMELY complex. I just need to understand this at a high-level for a module assignment.

Now the account value piece of the benefit is of course funded with the account value itself, but is there an additional reserve required for the guaranteed face amount benefit? Or is the ending reserve the max (account value, some calculated reserve).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Printing money

I had a thought this morning, that slightly ties into what was discussed in a different thread about living in a post-scarcity world, plus BOJ's decision to have negative interest rates.

What if the US government sent every American a crisp $100 bill? Didn't issue debt or count it as an expenditure; just straight up printed money and sent it out.

Setting aside the legality of it (I don't think this can be done). What would happen? Inflation would increase and consumer spending would pop up, and the value of the dollar would drop slightly. Would that be bad? It seems like that's exactly the goals we've been striving for with QE, but this would benefit poor people more.

Trying to talk my son out of becoming an actuary

I am the CFO of a personal lines carrier and my son brought up some ridiculous notion of him wanting to become an actuary. I have an actuary who reports to me because some outdated law says that I need to have my reserves signed off by one. Otherwise, I consider him to be a serious liability and drain of cash which I would rather spend on data scientists. The guy comes up to my office and gives me these cute drawings of triangles (what is this, middle school?) and tries to justify setting the reserves based on these outdated methodologies that don't even look at the underlying claimant characteristics that might be the cause of loss development.

Trying to figure out development by looking at patterns in aggregate data? Please. What a joke. That's why I would rather have data scientists - they actually look at the claimant data in detail to figure out what's going on. I'm pretty sure you can program AI to replicate what a human would do when picking development factors. Most actuaries' jobs can be programmed away.

Look buddy, I didn't get to CFO without reading up on my real analysis and elements of statistical learning. The actuarial career is going down the tubes. Guys, please help me steer my son away from this career.

Why isn't there a maternity/paternity leave insurance product?

I'm talking about a supplemental insurance product sold to working employees, private of the employer,

That works like disability insurance policy, except it covers the cost either to the employer or the employee of the cost of the lost productivity during the newborn FMLA 12-week period.

Perhaps the policy would have a cheaper premium if you buy the coverage while single and not married,

Would charge more for married couples,

And then more depending on salary to be covered

And plan can cover 100% of salary but only for the FMLA 12-week period, for both maternal and paternal

And if company has paid leave, you would be capped at 100% salary between all income sources, so instead if working for a company with paid leave, you would get a premium discount off the private policy.

Mahler PE 3.6

Man, it is tough to find a discussion about a specific problem from Mahler's exams.
I think I have a mental block when it comes to calculating bias. I set up the equation without a problem and think I know where Im going but then there is some assumption, or some step, logic, etc. that I just don't see. Happens on all but the most simple bias problems I try (and those Im likely getting by just being lucky).

Take this problem for example. The extimator is Xbar*e^-.54. We are estimating the mean of the lognormal. We know that. It's given in the tables.

I set up: Bias = E(extimator) - parameter_being_estimate. We are given sigma^2 = .36

So Bias = E(Xbar*e^-.54) - e^(u-sigma^2).

First term = e^-.54E(Xbar)
Second term = e^-.36 * e^u

Ok, now here is where things get weird for me. The problem gives us u=8 and n=1000. If I plug in what I have, I am left with:
Bias = e^-.54(E(xbar)) - e^7.64.

The solution says that the estimator is an unbiased estimator (how, i don't see, I can't hang with the steps of the solution). But OK. That means that the terms on the right are equal. So I solve for what's remaining, E(xbar), which comes out to 3568.85. So? what does that tell me - pretty much nothing because without the solution saying the bias is 0 I wouldn't have determined E(xbar), and it is apparently irrelevant anyway.

In the solution it says the E(xbar) = E(x). Why? How do we know that? isn't x bar = sum of our samples / n? What allows us to make this assumption? I think if I could understand this part (why E(xbar) = E(x)) I might be able to figure out what is going on with this problem.

Anyone got any hints?

Thanks!

are actuary careers dying out?

just got off the phone with my dad, CFO of financial firm and he has ripped me a new one over my decision to become an actuary.

he has always wanted me to become an accountant - i find accounting mind deadeningly boring. so boring i could stab myself

when i stumbled onto quantitative analysis this year, my mind literally exploded. i love everything about statistics i think this is my calling. if i could do this every day i know i'll be challenged and not bored

he says that actuaries are a dying breed - less jobs every year, more and more people trying to get in to the field and that i am making a HUGE mistake heading down this path.

is it really that bad?

Feedback between model use and availability of data

Hi there,

It is my understanding that sometimes models are used for the purposes of business selection - for example, you might build a model that says that so-and-so potential insureds that have characteristics xyz are undesirable and hence should no longer be written on the company's books.

However, should such a model be implemented, the company would no longer be collecting data on this population. I was thinking that if the company wanted to write the business at some point in the future, it would no longer have adequate data available for modeling.

Is this a legitimate concern or is there nothing to worry about?

From allied health to actuarial...

I wanted to get some input from people here about the skills that will be desirable for someone exploring a career change from allied health to actuarial.

[disclaimer] I have spent a good deal of time searching for and reading information relating to career changer advice both on AO and elsewhere, but haven't come across something that answers my questions here [/disclaimer]

I currently work in allied health in direct client care, and am also studying for actuarial exams as a first step towards a career change. I am anticipating this process to be a relatively lengthy one, and am hoping to find advice regarding specific skills that I can develop in the next 6-12 months that can take me from being an average or below-average EL candidate to being an above-average or excellent EL candidate.

Here's a vignette of my current situation:
-Bachelor's degree from prestigious university in a non-quantitative field
-Two master's degrees from semi-prestigious university in non-quantitative fields relating to bachelor's; graduated with "exceptional merit"

-Employed in allied health for last 3 years; regular quantitative work required
->At current job, recognized as among those leading the department in revenue and utilization; Department exceeded budget projection by 18% in 2015
->Current job/workplace identified as a top midsized company in my state for entire duration of employment
->Acquired specific credentials to advance in workplace; currently supervising students and interns in workplace

-Limited experience with Excel and SQL

-Multiple awards/recognitions in field of study, both academic and outside academia

-Identified by current and former executives as having excellent interview skills

--
TL;DR - I have been working in allied health in a non-quantitative role. Much of the feedback that I have seen on AO deals with people who have degrees in quantitative fields or experience in quantitative jobs, but I don't have that. What can I do to make myself as appealing as possible as an interview candidate, given my situation, other than taking and passing exams?

Thanks!

ASM Quiz 57-1

Hello. I am using the most recent edition of the ASM manual to study. Can someone please help me with quiz 57-1 - in particular the derivation of V_a and V_b ?

What I thought to do for V_a was calculate the following :
E(A)=0*0.75 + 1*0.25 = 0.25
E(A^2)=0^2*0.75 and 1^2*0.25=0.25
And then solve for V_a like
V_a = 0.25 - 0.25^2 = 0.1875

I used a similar methodology for V_b

To get v I just took:

v=0.5(V_a + V_b) which is done in the solution, however they have different values of V_A and V_b

Can someone please help ?

Please let me know if this isn't clear enough and I'll try to elaborate more!

Thanks in advance!

Recent Graduate help on job hunting!

Hi everyone, this is my first ever post so please let me know if I make any mistakes.

I'm a recent graduate with Bachelor in Actuarial Science. I've taken 2 exams (FM, P) in the span of 3 month (10/2015 - 01/2016). I changed major from Biology and Business Adm to actuary during my junior year, big stretch I know. And I've spend the last yr just to catch up all the coursework so I could graduate soon. Result of that is that I didn't realize I need to find internship and social more with other people from the industry. Now my biggest problem is that I don't have any actuary related experience whatsoever. I've only worked 2 jobs: pharm tech(current), restaurant server.

So my questions are:

1. Where/How should I look for jobs? (I've used indeed, careerbuilder, monster, glassdoor, some local company websites)

2. What other type of positions should I be looking at if there's not much opening in the actuary department of a company? (I heard data analyst is a good place to start).

3. I barely got 1,2 interview and they're not even for the actuarial positions. Is it because my resume has flaws? (That's before I added exam P on my resume recently)

I'll attach my resume here (please let me know if I left any sensitive info out, thank you)
Attachment 35107

4. What kind of interview style does the actuarial positions usually have? behavior, 'tell me about your experience', case interview...etc.

5. I notice that a lot openings require SQL, access...etc skills. If I haven't learn these in school, can I learn the basics by myself and put it on my resume? (For example, I found this Vertabelo Academe that teaches basic SQL online for free)

6. Generally what should I do now to make myself more sell-able?

Career Help Please For Aspiring Actuary UK

I am in a very difficult predicament and in need of professional help.

In 2011 i started studying Mathematics with Economics at Aston University, I was told by my school tutors that i had a lot of potential but at the time i was very immature. Having started university i didn't consider my career or post uni life which i regret, I just jumped at the opportunity of studying a subject which i was good at. I got through the first year without attending any classes with an average of 50.21%, second year came and nothing changed I was still immature spending my time playing computer games, spending more time with my girlfriend than attending any classes. During the same year my grandma passed away, i was able to use this in my extenuating circumstances and had to repeat the year, during the second year i averaged 51.72% which accounts for 25% of the overall degree. I had an option to take a placement year yet again i was immature and rejected the opportunity so I could graduate asap. Third year came by now i was starting to show signs of maturity, having dumped my girlfriend because 'she was holding me back' my mindset was starting to change. I quickly realized this is the mindset i should have had when in my first year because i was making mistakes as a student, which had i made in first year i would have learnt from and implemented a new strategy in the coming years. It's too late to dwell on the past, I need to work with my current situation to come up with a better future.

It is now 2016 and i still haven't graduated i still have 2 modules to complete and all of a sudden i enjoy studying and seeking knowledge. I now face a problem of only achieving a 2.2 as the highest possible grade. My heart aches when thinking about the past, thinking about all the classes i could have learnt some beautiful material from, all the geniuses from my class i could have met and more importantly the library full of books which i never even set eyes on :( .

Over the last year my life philosophy changed, i guess it had to after making a serious of poor decisions. I started reading books which i had never ever done, not even as a kid, i started reading into personal development and now I'm addicted to growth and becoming the best version of me.

The problem is now i am 25 years old and I want to be an Actuary. I am actually grateful for the life experience i've had, I have analysed my mistakes and i know i will never be making these again. Sometimes your best teacher is your last mistake, it's time to learn from them and chase down the goals. Oh yes, i've also become more goal orientated.

I'm in need of your help, i need a strategy to become an Actuary. I don't have any experience that's the worrying thing. I also don't have any exams under my belt, but i will start working towards the Actuarial Analyst Certificate this year. Right now all I have is a burning desire to become an Actuary and to show that potential which was once talked about.

I have also attached my CV would it be possible for you guys to critically analyse that as well.

DNAinfo also describes a months-long repair time for dash cams that experienced “intentional destruction.” For example: Jason Van Dyke, the officer who shot and killed McDonald and has been charged with first-degree murder, brought in his dash cam in early 2014 to have a wiring problem fixed, and got it back three months later, on June 17. The very next day, the dash cam was broken again. This time it took until October 8 to fix what appeared to be intentional damage. Less than two weeks later, his dash-cam footage of the McDonald shooting (which differs from the viral video we all saw) had no sound. Police records show that the microphones in his car had never been synced up to the camera.

You would think they would be charged with Destruction of Government Property or something like that. You would be wrong.

Quote:

reprimands and suspensions of up to three days to officers who damaged their dash cams
This isn't a 3 day suspension if it got damaged, this is a 3 day suspension if the officer was the one to damage it.

This is tax dollars being spent fixing these cameras, and there's only one reason to intentionally break a recording device. That is because you're scared of what it is going to record.

Heres' three things I realized last night.

Okay, so you know how everbodys' always getting racist against guns because their dad never showed them how to shoot? You also got how the gun haters are also probly prochoice while regular people who know about guns are pro life. Well, an argument pro gun people have been using for awhile now is that even if guns are made illegal people will still use them to commit crimes. "Since when do criminals follow laws?" - pro-gun people. So you understand I am saying. Well pro-choice people say that if abortions are made illegal then people will still get abortions, but they will be more dangerous. So essentially its the same argument. Thats' why guns should be kept legal.

Another thing is I got in this argument with this pothead and I realized this last night. Its okay to argue with a pothead about something axcept you just have to make sure its not about pot because the pothead is never going to change his mind about that. Sometimes they even get high and mighty about organics foods and such and then get racist at you for drinking Dr. Pepper. Thats why its not worth telling potheads anything.

The other thing I realized is Trump has got the whole thing rapped up so they might as well call it now. Think about it. The democrats side is either going to be Barney Sanders or a woman, so no bodys' going to vote for them. Also spagetti is a stupid food when you think about it.
