Small, Petty Rant.

When I study for exams, I often see somethin in the material that makes me angry. This time, I felt like I needed to vent. I apologize in advance.

In Clark, you can use the growth function to calculate the discounted reserve.
The formula makes sense... IF we are talking about reserves calculated with the LDF Method.

BUT THEY DON'T MENTION ANY OTHER FORMULA. And then, the Casual Fellow manual has a practice problem. It uses this formula, which is REALLY only correct for the LDF Method and applies it to an ultimate calculated from the Cape Code method.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
This does NOT work! You end up allocating a different $ of reserve (Depending on if Cape Cod would produce a lower or higher estimate, given the growth functions.)

Ok, I'm good now. I just hate when I have to teach myself something illogical.

ASM Exam FM, 11th Edition for Sale
$85 including shipping.
No markings. Bought it from Actuarial Bookstore.

Passed this December using ASM and Coaching Actuaries subscription for a month. I first did all the ASM Practice tests and then did CA tests starting at level 7 or 8 under exam conditions and then stuck to level 4-6 until exam day.
The higher level tests were difficult but helped in getting an in depth knowledge of the concepts. I didn't worry if I scored low, made notes of the new points I learned on flash cards and avoided making silly mistakes every time. I am sure if you can dedicate time to take as many tests as u can and not worry about earned level on CA you will get to a point where u will get at least 25 or even 30 right. The actual exam is similar to a level 4-5 as most people mentioned but there were quesions of a level 6 or 7 and options were all very conceptual. So please do not leave out anything. Make sure you understand every topic thoroughly and this can understanding will only come by taking as many test as u can and reviewing the answers.
Good Luck to everyone on this Forum!

Spring 2016 ST Progress

Planning to start studying for this next week. There's no way I'm going to take S so figured I would rather overstudy than run out of time like I did for the Fall 2015 sitting.

How's everyone planning to study for ST this time around since we'll all have sat for ST at least once before? Or if you've passed ST, how did you prepare?

AT&T Career Opportunities

The Benefits organization within AT&T currently has two roles open seeking those with both strong analytical skill set and the ability to communicate effectively and prolifically. While there isn't an exam track within AT&T (or even a large actuarial community), it is a great opportunity for both career flexibility and growth for those who have the actuarial skill set but aren't necessarily seeking an FSA credential. Compensation & Benefits are very competitive with what a pre-ASA or ASA consultant or actuarial analyst is likely currently making for both base pay and bonus. If you have a designation (ASA, EA) sponsorship of a conference to maintain designation is negotiable.

Both jobs report to directors who used to work in the benefits consulting world (myself and my peer) so will be able to speak to the change coming from the consulting world to the employer environment. Having the opportunity to work at a company offering health care coverage to over a million lives and who has union benefits provides fertile ground for all types of work. While healthcare experience is preferred for the design job it is not a requirement.

Please feel free to share with those you think are interested as I think this is a great and rare opportunity.

AG38 vs Tax Reserve

The official NAIC stance seems to be that Actuarial Guidelines are not law, but just a "clarification" of the law (i.e., retroactive to the last revision of the SVL). I know FL adopts AGs as regulations, making them law. (There may be other states that do this.)

AG38 and AG48 are written like laws, including effective dates (which imply that the law changed based upon policy issue date). Many state regulators treat them as if they imposed minimum requirements (including the VM-20 requirements, despite the Valuation Manual not yet being effective). Does that make AG38 reserves tax-deductible?

How experienced before putting Excel on resume?

So how well do you need to know Excel or any other technical skill before you can put it on your resume? I'm currently learning Excel using online resources as I had no previous exposure to it. At what point should I feel confident about having it on my resume and not be bullshitting?

Also somewhat irrelevant, if I have an exceptional SAT score (800 verbal, 760 math), is it worth putting on the resume? I am from a different country than the US so maybe 800 on verbal would actually be impressive to the employer? Or is the achievement too old to count? I only ask because I saw a resume for critique on this sub-forum that did include SAT score and critics didn't shoot it down immediately.

P.S. In regards to my comment about my ethnic background, I'm from another country but grew up in the US as a kid (if this whole thing even matters).

The film is produced by Lucasfilm and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Principal photography began at Elstree Studios, near London during early August 2015. Did I just waste 8 years of my life trying to be an actuary?

Long post incoming.

A little about myself:
I'm your average Joe.

While all of my classmates went to college, I decided to enter the workforce because the cost wasn't worth it. I got no scholarships (Bad high school GPA but very high SAT scores [2310]).

I started working at McDonald's as a fry cook, but I got fired after 3 months because I got caught secretly eating the fries and nuggets during work.

I landed a desk/office job at an import/export company 1 month later, which is where I'm still working.
I started at $45,000/year + bennies and reached my current salary of $125,000/year + bennies & 30% annual bonuses in just 3 years due to good performance.

The job is very low stress. I file a few paperwork and reply to ~5 e-mails a day, but I feel that I've capped out professionally. There's only 1 manager in the office, and he's around my age, so I don't think he's going to quit any time soon.

I've saved up $500,000 in my bank account + $70,000 in cash so far, which I feel is below where I should be at my age (30). I still live with my parents, so I don't have any bills I need to worry about.
I want to get rich so I can attract a former high school peer of mine, but I just don't see myself becoming rich working where I'm at. I decided to pursue the actuarial exams. So far, I've passed all SOA exams for the Life insurance track. I've been applying to jobs and all of them require a college degree. I've heard back from no company.

I was considering enrolling in a college, but it costs $250,000, which is almost half of what I've saved up. Is it really worth the cost to go to college just so I can be an actuary? I feel like I've wasted so much time trying to be one.

I feel so depressed. I am thankful that I am more fortunate than some of my HS peers who have $150,000+ in college debt and are struggling to find even work at a fast food joint, but the girl I'm trying to get said she won't date anyone with under $10 million in the bank. Will I stay poor forever? I love my job, but I have to be rich. What should I do?

How important is going to annual meeting for ACAS

So, I may or may not be ready for next years' annual meeting. But, I'm the kind of person who doesn't really care much about traveling. Some of you might see it as a free trip, but I could care less about the trip. So, why should I go to the annual meeting? Is it required to become an ACAS? I would assume not.

Flood fatalities

In all honesty I don't want to sound insensitive to what I'm about to say. I have a really close family friend whose best friend and his wife both drowned a couple of years ago in a flood. Really sad story. They just got married a month prior and actually called family in the car knowing they weren't going to make it. They suffered the typical flood drowning fate by attempting to drive into a flooded roadway.

This leads to the reason for this post.

1.) Why do people continue to drive into flooded roadways? There was some minor flooding in my area once but there's no way of telling how flooded the road is and how quickly the water is rising. I was the only one of about 6 around me that decided to turn around and take a 2 minute detour to avoid. Seems like a reasonable thing to do for anyone who watches the news.

2.) I know I must be naïve, but I just feel like it wouldn't be that hard to escape a vehicle being overcome with water. I know it's naïve because countless people die every time there's a flood and I'm no Michael Phelps or Aquaman. It just seems like there's got to be a way to not panic and do the right things to survive your car being swept away in a flooded roadway. I just wonder what percent are a result of panicking or making bad decisions like trying to squeeze out of a window rather than opening the door when the pressure equalizes. And wasting oxygen going crazy banging against windows or something.

I know there are some circumstances where fatality can't be avoided such as levees breaking and extreme flash floods where there's no time and fast moving water with currents and whatnot. But it seems like so many fatalities sound completely avoidable to me, as compared to other natural disaster fatalities like tornados and earthquakes.

My First Ultra Orthodox Wedding

Not 100% sure what to expect.

I know ceremony and party will be gender separated. We know how to dress. I assume I do not need to wear a tallis. Will wear a kippah. Will my wife be required to cover her head? If so I assume they hand out the doilies. But other than that not sure.

Are they usually a sit down dinner, assigned seating like any other wedding? Just buffet?

One band and both sides dance to the same stuff? Anything else that I should know.

So what is marijuana like for you?

I'm curious what the effect is on you for teh marijuanas.

I enjoy it but it isn't a solve all whereas some of my buddies profess it to be the best thing ever. Guys making $1M+ per year.

For me the feeling is:

Nothing
then
Disassociation plus mild panic (whoa what's going on is this going to be ok)
then
Relaxation........
then
Desire to experience food and sex for hours. Video games can be awesome.

I also sleep really well but wake up early. Sometimes I can be cranky the next day or sometimes just really chill and cuddly.

Honestly looking for trip reports not political commentary on the drug.

As an aside I typically microdose like .3g or so at a time. I don't think I like larger doses that much.

2015 AOF Baseball Keeper League

The design of AOF Baseball Keeper League (AOFBKL) allows maximum participation among Actuarial Outpost denizens in a free fantasy baseball keeper league.

Board: The power to amend rules and veto trades rests with the AOFBKL Board comprised of three individuals. The Board chooses an AOFBKL Observer. The Observer represents any unavailable Board member throughout the season. The Observer becomes a Board member the following season. The replaced board member becomes the AOFBKL Commissioner. The Commissioner creates and administers the league online. The Commissioner represents any second unavailable board member.

Structure and Scoring:
General – The league will be managed on the yahoo fantasy baseball system. The league competes head-to-head weekly with the top six teams reaching the championship tournament. The 7th – 12th ranked teams will enter into the consolation tournament. The 2016 MLB season begins on Sunday, April 3 and a full slate of games later in the week. April 3 stats will accumulate toward the full Week 1.

Stats - Scoring will be determined by 5x5 statistics (R, HR, RBI, SB, Avg; W, Sv, K ERA, WHIP). Pitching statistics will have a 9-inning weekly minimum.

Rosters – Teams will be limited to 19 players with 16 active and 3 bench positions. In addition, teams have 2 DL spots that do not count against the 19 limit; players must be on the real life MLB-DL, and identified as such by the yahoo system, to be moved to a DL spot. The active roster will be C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, UTIL, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, and P.

Transactions – Lineup changes can be made daily. The trade deadline will be the soonest available option after the MLB non-waiver trade deadline. There is a limit of 50 adds allowed per season. A dropped player will be on waivers for 2 days before becoming a free agent. It is first come, first served on non-waiver free agents, however players have to clear the waiver process determined by waiver priority.

Keeper Rules:
Deadline - Participants must declare their keeper intentions privately to the Commissioner by Friday, February 26th (subject to change by new Commish or enough complaints from league members.

Costs, Drafted Players - To keep a player the following year, one must select that player in a round of half the previous year rounded up; such that a 15th round selection one year will cost an eighth round selection the next. Therefore the following year for your first round pick you have the option of keeping a first or second round pick from the previous year or selecting a player from free agency.

Costs, Non-Drafted Players - A non-drafted free agent acquisition will count as a 20th round draft pick toward the keeper rules, such that to keep him the following year you will be required to spend a 10th round draft pick on him. A drafted and dropped free agent acquisition will keep his current year draft round status, such that a sixth round draft pick later dropped and acquired by any team will require a third round pick to retain said player for keeper purposes.

Costs, Other - You may use an earlier round for keeper purposes; such that a 15th round selection one year may be taken in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ... or 8th round the next year. Only one player may be kept per each pick you own in a given round. If you are keeping a player in the latest possible round (i.e., the 8th round for a 15th round keeper), and you have multiple picks in that round, the earliest pick in that round must be used for keeper purposes.

Limits - A player may not be kept for more than two consecutive seasons. Regardless of when you acquire the player, he may be kept for a second season and kept again for a third season. You may acquire this player again through the normal draft process in the fourth season. Keeper status follows the player even if he is traded and kept by a different owner.

End of Year Roster - The last day of the fantasy postseason is the deadline for adding a player for keeper purposes. The day after that, the commissioner will copy the team rosters from Yahoo and post them here. Players added on the final day of the season will not be eligible to be kept.

Draft:
General - There are 19 rounds to the draft. The draft will be completed in a singular thread on the Actuarial Outpost in a non-serpentine draft. When a team manager makes a selection, that manager should notify, via PM, the commissioner and the managers with the next three picks.

Timing – The draft thread will be posted Monday, February 22ish. The draft will begin no later than Monday, February 29. Each pick will be slotted to a deadline (during a business day) to draft one player. The draft will be scheduled to take place over 17 business days.

Note #1 About Draft Timing, Deadlines – The draft schedule simply lists the deadline for each pick to be made. A draft pick can be submitted prior to that deadline. In fact, the first draft pick is usually submitted shortly after keeper submissions have been published, days prior to the scheduled start of the draft. And deadlines rarely, if ever, come in to play. Please keep an eye on the progress of the draft and be prepared to make you selection with the flow of the draft.

Note #2 About Draft Timing, Weekends – While the draft schedule has deadlines only on weekdays, members of the league tend to check in on the weekends during the draft. Please keep an eye on the progress of the draft and be prepared to make you selection with the flow of the draft, even if your turn comes up on a weekend.

Note #3 About Draft Timing, Proxies - As the draft progresses, you may notice that you’ll be unavailable to log on to the AO during a stretch of time when your pick is likely to go on the clock (maybe you’ll be out of town or simply stuck in a meeting for a while). In such instances, please consider sending a list of players from which to make a proxy selection for you to one or more other team managers. This will allow the draft to continue in your absence. At a minimum, please communicate your planned absence to the league so that the rest of the league managers can plan accordingly.

Order - The consolation tournament (7th through 12th places) determines the first six draft picks for the next year: The 7th place team will be slotted into the first draft position, the 8th place team into the 2nd draft position and so on. Positions 8 - 14 are the 13th - 20th finishers in the previous regular season. The last 6 positions are determined by the championship bracket: Once a team falls into the loser's bracket of the non-consolation tourney ("5th place game" for first-round losers, "3rd place game" for losers in the semis), the winner of those two games gets the higher draft position. The Champion will pick 20th.

Members Leaving League - If someone leaves the league, the players on that person’s team become free agents and a new member will be admitted to the league. The new member is given the pick between the lowest finisher in the regular season and the lowest pick remaining from the championship bracket. All other picks are adjusted as necessary. If a returning owner has acquired a pick in round X from an owner who has now dropped out of the league - the returning owner will retain the pick in round X. The pick will be inserted at X.YY-a, where YY is the position it would have been had the owner not dropped out. All other picks in that round will move down one spot. Note: some rounds may have more than 20 picks and others fewer than 20 picks due to this rule.

Trades:
Off-season - Off-season trades are allowed January 1 through Monday, February 15. Players traded in the off-season must be kept.

During Draft - Trades are allowed during the beginning of the year draft but they should not slow down the draft. Any "shopping around" for your pick or the corresponding player should be done before it is your turn to draft.

Restrictions - Picks in the subsequent year draft are available for trade during the season (following the end of the draft and before the trade deadline), with the following 3 exceptions*:

*NOTE: These rules do not apply to off-season draft pick trades between January 1 and February 15.

Waitlist: In late November, the previous season's Commissioner (or someone more vigilant) will create a poll that determines who is coming back for the next season. He will also send a pm to each waitlister to tell them to vote in the poll. If you are currently on the waitlist and respond in this poll by mid December, your place will be honored on the waitlist, if you fail to respond in the poll, your name will be removed.

FYI: A quick word about alt ids. Some people feel the need for whatever reason to maintain more than one ID on the AO. If you own a team with one ID and are migrating from one alt to another, make sure you let the commissioner know about your new ID or out yourself in some way in league thread so we know who you are for league purposes.

What do actuaries invest in?

Other than index funds and stock picks.....what do you guys invest in?

I feel like I have too much exposure to the stock/bond market, and I would like to park my money (roughly 20k) elsewhere. I am young and can tolerate moderate risk.

Just to get the conversation started: Prosper.

They can be whatever, when you look back at 2015, what makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside?

My things, in no particular order, finished a triathlon, climbed an 11b (indoor) and bouldered some V4s, got a better job, watched the Jays a bit through the playoffs, had some good vacations, voted against Harper, winter so far has been awesome mild, and summer was also nice and mild, oh and finished the 100 day burpee challenge.

EOM 3 Task 1

For the defined benefit is it one split rate across all salary levels or can I input different split rates for different salaries. Like can 50K have a rate of 1.3/1.7 and 100k a rate of 1.4/1.75 etc..? I am assuming its one rate for all but i just want to be certain. Thanks

Course 1 Pre-requisites?

I was looking to maybe start course 1, but it doesn't say what you would need to know educational wise before you take it, and I haven't found any forums for it neither. For example: What level of math would I need in order to pass it?

I haven't even taken Exam 1 (Probability) yet, but it says on the website that basic knowledge of insurance and risk management is assumed for the exam, so is that what the 2 online CAS courses are for? Do you take them prior to Exam 1 for the knowledge?

Thanks,

Did Obi Wan really become more powerful than Vader could have imagined?

Telling the kid to turn off the targeting computer? Sending him off to Degobah? He could have done those things while still breathing imo.

Or is Vader just weak in the imagination skillz? I noticed Obi never made such a comment to Han.

What happened to Dr Fishcer the psychometrician?

So I remember the announcement when CAS hired Dr Fischer (psychometrician (an expert on testing)) in 2013.

No one answered my previous question, so I thought let me ask him directly. I can't find him on the CAS website.

Is there no testing expert at the CAS anymore? The Director of Admissions is now Ashley Zamperini. She doesn't seem to be a psychometrician.

Anyone know what happened to Dr Fishcer?

Schedule P counts question

Cross-posting in case someone in a wider audience knows the answer:

I thought I had read that when you complete Schedule P part 5 (direct and assumed counts), you don't include counts for business that is 100% ceded. Of course, now that I need to apply it, I can't find support for that statement. The closest thing I can find relates to pooling agreements and not reinsurance.

Can anyone help me out here? Am I just totally misremembering?

Exam Difficulty vs Career

I know this is a very broad question but I am wondering how people would compare the difficulty of their job to the exams they've taken. If you are entry level, how is the difficulty compare to the prelim exams?

Too many exams can hurt entry level job search?

Hello AO,

I'm currently reading a book by Tom Miller that gives insight to the entry level job market for actuaries. He says if you have four or more exams passed before your first job, it actually hurts your chances of finding one. He goes on to to explain that this phenomenon, which he calls "pricing yourself out of the market", is due to how too many exams as a new hire "breaks the formula" of how you get compensated, as compensation is typically based on a combination of exams passed AND years of experience, which is expected to rise together. As a result, having too many exams with no prior work experience means you would get paid more than what employers are willing to pay solely based on exam progress, and so they simply don't.

Thoughts?

Lognormal versus Black-Scholes Framework

This question is related to Monte Carlo Valuation, but will probably help me in understanding Lognormal since I don't

Suppose we have this setup

S = 45
Delta = .05
Sigma = .2
Alpha = .15
R = .04
European Put
K = 50
T = 4
We're simulating with 4 uniform #s .2, .6, .3, .8

Find current value of option using these 4

The question is: what is the difference between if the stock follows a lognormal model versus the Black-Scholes framework?

Fall 2015, Q15: UEPR calculation

The question says "On April 1, 2014, the company wrote its first and only insurance policy -- a 12 month WC policy". In this case, I would have proceeded as below.

EP = (9/12) * WP
UEPR = 50% (WP - EP)

The official CAS solution uses 8.5/12 for EP calculation. Should't this apply only if policies were written uniformly through out the whole month? What am I missing?

"Briefly describe" vs. "Describe" vs. "Fully Describe"

Looking at recent tests, it seems like,

Briefly describe --> 0.25 points
Describe --> 0.5 points
Fully describe --> 0.75 to 1 points

What's a typical correlation with "number of sentences/words" for each? For example, to give an argument against "AM Best is, effectively, a regulator of the insurance industry."

Briefly Describe --> "AM best does not have legal authority to regulate."

Describe --> "AM best does not have legal authority to regulate. For example, it has no authority to approve or reject rate filing."

Fully Describe --> "AM best does not have legal authority to regulate. For example, it has no authority to approve or reject rate filing. AM Best can not take control of an insurance company in case of impending insolvency. AM Best can not stop management of insurance company from taking certain decisions."

In case of fully describe, the last 3 sentences logically follow from the first one (no legal authority). So, basically, we are just elaborating the same thing, with more words, for more points.

So, ultimately, what's the # of sentences per 0.25 pt metric?

Why doesn't Vader's shot hit Luke's x-wing?

This apparently needs it's own thread.

Episode 4, on the trench run. Vader lines up his shot, says 'i have you now', and fires.

THEN Han shoots Vader's wing man and careens off into space.

That's always bothered me. What am I missing? I could see if Han's shot hit the wing man who then bumps Vader's Tie Fighter causing him to miss the shot, but that's clearly not what happens. Is that they way that scene is supposed to be interpreted?

Bringing the general statement to slightly more specific, if asked to pick up a pen, I would say that the choice is either comply or defy if you were unaware of the pen. I have a record of emotional political discourse that I am aware of. That stated, are there more appropriate words to describe the choice?

Visitor insurance for mom

This is not non-actuarial. But doesn't belong to Health/P&C forum too because its personal. Doesn't belong to personal finance as well coz its not entirely finance.

Anyway my mother is on a visit from out of states. I want to buy a visitor's insurance policy for her that could cover her medical needs. A problem is, she is already sick (fever) and saw a doctor two days ago. I paid cash for that (minor amount; only $40 for the doctor's visit). She is going to this doctor again tomorrow and will probably have some labs done. I bought a visitor insurance policy for her today but the agent said that if there's any pre-existing condition the claim will not be covered. He said its up to the doctor to say that the condition already existed, while filing for the claim. He also said that normally if you file the claim next day of buying the policy they think it was a pre-existing condition and deny the claim.

Now if I take her in tomorrow, file the claim, the claim gets denied due to pre-existing, suppose any major problem happens one or two weeks from now (not related to this illness), will there be a higher chance of claim getting denied?

In short, I want to take advantage of the policy tomorrow, and then also want to make sure if anything major happens, the coverage is there. Is it possible? I am a Life actuary, and don't have much idea about health coverages. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated :)

Okay so I understand the first figure, the Earth is rotating counter clockwise, so a plane flying south without adjustment would seem to end up west of where it should be.

But in the 2nd figure, if the Earth is still rotating counter clockwise, why does an air parcel being pushed northward by the pressure gradient force end up to the east? I thought it would also end up to the west?

Esurance: Why Insurance Companies can't have Nice Mascots.

It's because of Rule 34.

Quote:

“I went outside, looked out at the ocean, and thought, ‘[Erin Esurance is] everything our demographic would want,’” says Brewe. “I needed an [animated] character that was fast-paced, action-oriented, and female.”

To create its mascot and TV campaign, Esurance had a budget of $60,000 — this, at a time when Geico and Progressive (their main competitors) were spending about $1 billion each on advertising alone. So, Brewe turned to W!ldbrain, a small, local animation studio, to help bring her concept to life.

Working off of Brewe’s suggestions, three male animators in their mid-20s and early 30s (Phil Robinson, Alan Lau, and Roque Ballesteros) designed a spunky, kick-ass, pink-haired secret agent, and named her Erin Esurance.

Esurance: Why Insurance Companies can't have Nice Mascots.

Selective Service

Some posts in another thread got me thinking about this. Here are some FAQ's:

https://www.sss.gov/QA

Some highlights:

Q:My son is an only son and the last male in our family to carry the family name. Is he exempt...?

A: No, the "only son," "the last son to carry the family name," and "sole surviving son" must still register with Selective Service.

These sons can be drafted. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family.

(was that ever a thing?)

Q: What is the penalty for not registering?

A: Failure to register is a violation of the Military Selective Service Act. Conviction for such a violation may result in imprisonment for up to five years and/or a fine of not more than $250,000.

(penalty seems a little excessive, dontcha think? I wonder if anyone has received anywhere close to the maximum penalty?

Q: Are undocumented immigrant males required to register?

A: Yes. All undocumented immigrant males 18 through 25 years of age, other than those admitted on non-immigrant visas, must register, whether or not they have a green card.

(I'm not gonna declare myself when I get to this country, but, oh boy, I better sign up for the draft! Could this be another tool in the war against illegal immigration? Get those Selective Service people pounding the pavement!)

Israel Takes Out Terrorist Who Smashed 4-Year-old Girl's Head W/Rock

http://ift.tt/1jPAtHz

Thank God they took this guy out. Israel and other nations need to do more of this. They need to wipe people like this off the face of the earth and have their names erased forever.

"As police began to arrive, the terrorists took Danny and Einat down to the beach. There, according to eyewitnesses, one of them shot Danny in front of Einat so that his death would be the last sight she would ever see. Then he smashed my little girl's skull in against a rock with his rifle butt. That terrorist was Samir Kuntar."

"Hezbollah commander Samir Kunter and eight other terrorists were killed in a targeted air strike in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana Saturday night. Kuntar spent 29 years in prison for the brutal murder of an Israeli man and his four-year-old daughter in 1979.

Earlier this year, the U.S. State Department named Kuntar a Specially Designated Global Terrorist for playing “an operational role, with the assistance of Iran and Syria, in building up Hizballah’s terrorist infrastructure in the Golan Heights.”"

"Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri condemned the assassination as an Israeli “crime.”

Hamas’s armed wing, Izaddin Kassam, accused the “Zionist enemy” of being behind the assassination. It said that Hamas would remain loyal to Kuntar’s path and “pursue jihad and resistance until the occupation is expelled, the prisoners and holy sites are freed and the right of return is achieved.”"

"Roni Keren, Danny Haran's brother, said that while he feels a small sense of comfort at Kuntar's elimination, it can't take the pain away.

"They said it was time, every dog has its day," he said of responses to the news in the family's Whatsapp group. "I hope it will convey the message: Whoever murders Jews in Israel and around the world, his end will be like that of Samir Kuntar and the Munich murderers. This is probably the only language understood in the Middle East."

Schedule P part 5

Part 5 is direct and assumed counts

If you have a 50% Quota Share agreement, both the primary and the reinsurer count each claim on their Schedule P (not 50% each).

However, I thought there was also rule that if the business was 100% ceded, then the primary should not record the counts in part 5. I've looked through Odomirok and COPLFR and can't find a source for this. Can anyone point me to the right material to support this, or that I am wrong?

HDMI Cord Differences

I got an Apple TV for Christmas and I need to purchase an HDMI cord. I remember when I bought my TV a couple of months ago from Best Buy, the prices ranged anywhere from $10-$120 per cord. I asked the salesperson what the differences were and he didn't say much other than recommending one that was $60~.

Is this all a scam? Am I going to be just fine going with the $6 HDMI cord that's on sale from Amazon? I've done a few Google searches but didn't come up with much other than a few articles from years ago. The general consensus was that they didn't matter much between price ranges but I didn't know if that was still true with the new technology that's on the market today.

Guys - how do you carry your money and all the various cards you need

I have a nice slim money clip that can hold cash, a debit card, credit card, license, maybe one or two other cards depending on thickness.

But that leaves me without my costco card, gym ID, sams club card, work ID card (this bad boy is rather thick), insurance ID card, spare credit cards.

I had been making do, by keeping that kind of stuff in my work bag because it's almost always with me. Except almost isn't really good enough. And now they make me use this super thick security card at work to get in and out so it doesn't fit in that clip at all so I moved to a thicker type wallet/clip thingy to make sure i always have that on me so I don't locked out taking a piss after 5pm.

Not like I had back in the day when I carried one of those costanza wallets in the back pocket. About a decade ago I switched to the slim front pocket design in the first paragraph. It's getting out of hand and I don't know what to do.

Also, do you guys carry your social security and selective service card around? I used to but now I don't. I might actually be too old to have to worry about the selective service card. Do they even still make you get one of those?

Summer 2016 CoP Registration

Selling: ASM FM 11th ed. and Actex MFE Spring 15 ed.

I am currently selling my ASM FM and Actex MFE study manuals. I am selling both manuals for $60 each. The ASM FM manual is the 11th edition and it is in good condition. The Actex MFE manual is the spring 2015 edition and it comes in 2 volumes, I only opened it a few times and it is in great condition. I would prefer meeting up with someone from the NYC area (I live on Staten Island) instead of shipping the manuals. Pm me if interested!

Social trends affect P&C actuary

I'm trying to learn a bit more about P&C insurance in preparation for some entry-level interviews. What are some social trends/changes (legislative policies, lawsuits, judicial changes, customer lifestyles) that have been a great impact on P&C insurance in the last 5 years?

Anything specific would be greatly appreciated!

Will any actuarial employers consider hiring a high school senior for a summer internship? I passed Exam P with a 9 last summer, and I am currently studying for Exam FM and intend to sit in April. I am taking multivariable calculus.

ASM Printed & Electronic Bundle Purchase

Sorry, this is probably a ridiculous question but I just wanted to confirm before making a purchase of $340.
http://ift.tt/1JDCBJi
Has anyone purchased this bundle? I get immediate electronic access & receive the hard copy several days later? I am confused on the 30% printing part. What does that mean? If I am already getting a hard copy shipped to me, why would I want to print any percentage of it? That's why I am worried about purchasing this since if I do not receive a 100% printed copy in the bundle then I rather just purchase the hard copy version for $250.
Thanks!

Annoying cash cards

So recently I acquired a couple of cash cards.

First you have to call in and activate it. Then I was unable to use the card at the gas station (put a hold on the account?), the haircut place (because of giving tips?), or the post office. But I had no trouble buying subs at Quiznos or movie theater tickets with them.

Then you have to keep track of the amount and try to spend the exact amount? Honestly I would rather just put a $50 bill in the mail and take my chances then put someone thru this. Looking on the internet I see they charge another $4 to offer this inconvenience. :exams:

Why do pass ratios go down/stay the same?

This has always puzzled me and I've always wanted to ask a psychometrician about this.

If the CAS psychometrician could answer this even better!

Seeing that the pass ratios decrease from the pre-lims to the uppers piqued my interest. Those however can be understandable. It's a different governing body coming up with those exams. Those exams also seem to get progressively longer/cover more material. So you can't really make a direct comparison between P and C. Having the same pass ratios can be explained.

Now the CAS upper exams have always been the ones that confused me the most. The upper exams are consistent and CAS oversees all of them. Exam 6US and 9 probably have the most material. I wouldn't say that the material on any of them is significantly harder to grasp than any of the other ones.

So we all know that only a certain % of people that start the exam process make it all the way through. The people that complete the pre-lims are better at passing exams then the initial set of people. The subset that make it to ACAS are better at passing the exams than the previous subset. The people taking FCAS exams are better at passing exams than the subset that only could pass 1 upper or stopped at ACAS. So the subset gets smaller as you move up.

So why don't the pass ratios go up? In everything else you see, when the subset gets smaller, the remaining group is generally better at passing tests than the original subset. Grad students gpa's vs undergrad. Grad students testing scores on the SAT/ACT/GRE vs undergrad. Sports is similar.

I did a quick chart to illustrate it. It's the weighted effective average pass ratios per exam. The CAS uppers are for the last 10 years. The pre-lims are only for 2011-present.

Why do pass ratios go down/stay the same?

Yo Nate! Question about something you said earlier

Sorry about the terrible subject heading. I think you said something about how the number of questions on the test (OC1 or OC2) is the same for each chapter no matter how long the chapter is. Is that correct? And, if so, how do you know that?

Thanks

The Revolution begins... in Texas of all Places!

Scene: Dallas, Texas. A well-armed group fed the homeless, defying¹ Dallas ordnance 29595, and declined to stop, even when confronted by The Law!

Quote:

The event went off without a hitch, even after code enforcers showed up. Lead organizer of the event, Murdoch Pizgatti was confronted by the enforcers who told him to file the proper paperwork upon the event’s conclusion to which, Pizgatti politely replied, “no.”

“We’ve already had to speak to the police, they’ve already come and delivered code to us,” said Short, explaining what happened when the code enforcers showed up. “But, after shaking hands with them, they realized we’re all armed – and we’re gonna do what we’re gonna do because it’s not an immoral thing that we are doing.”
Gun-totin' lefty-types. We could learn a thing or two from them. Also, how many damned ordinances does Dallas need?! 30,000? That's a lot!

How to get an entry level Actuarial Analyst job if experience is required?

Hi everyone,

I have passed the 3 exams and am having a hard time getting an entry level position. Even the entry level position "Actuarial Analyst" required 2-3 years of experience when I applied. No response from them. From where do new people start like me? Unfortunately, I didn't have an undergrad in Actuarial Science or internship. Please advise. Your input would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Why is CAS so backward when it comes to reading materials for upper exams?

My general sense is that there aren't going to be any students who are taking upper level exams. Mostly, working actuaries, or an occasional, (recently) unemployed actuary.

For all such applicants, forking out an extra $1000 even out of pocket, in case company does not cover, would not be a big deal (after all, seems like most applicants take TIA video courses).

Couldn't CAS charge an extra $1000 and get the reading material reworked?

1. Errata -- merge them in the new editions, for god's sake. Why the hell publish errata for an electronic document, just update the darn thing.

2. Better layout/publishing -- the entire PDF is set in mostly one, not terribly readable font. Paragraphs are not even right justified.

I am reading Odomirok, and by golly, I have read better typeset engineering manuscripts as far back as mid-1980s. Folks, that's Ronald Reason time! 30 years later, there is no excuse for such lame documents.

Financial Statement of a REAL insurance company

In various places, it is recommended that besides the financial statements of the fictitious insurance company, it would be a good idea to print and review a current financial statement from a real insurance company.

I am assuming that for stock-based US insurance companies, a good source would be the 10K from SEC. For the purposes of this exam, which US company makes would be a good one? By "good", I mean free of extraneous / exotic distractions.

AIG -- Probably not a good one. I presume statements from a company like AIG might still have various carry overs from their credit default swap insurance disaster, and needlessly large number of caveats and footnotes.

Farmers -- too complicated due to exchange of multiple companies?

What have others used? A small, regional, traditional, conservative company like Shelter Insurance?

Making a Murderer

A newish netflix documentary.

"Filmed over a 10-year period, Making a Murderer is an unprecedented real-life thriller about Steven Avery, a DNA exoneree who, while in the midst of exposing corruption in local law enforcement, finds himself the prime suspect in a grisly new crime. Set in America's heartland, the series takes viewers inside a high-stakes criminal case where reputation is everything and things are never as they appear."

Although it mostly gives me an angry, disgusted and uncomfortable feeling, we are 5 episodes in and highly addicted.

I think its kind of like the Serial podcast but I never listened to them.

Job Transition Advice

Hi everyone,

I was offered a job as a Benefits Calculation Administrator at a very large firm that employs actuaries. I've passed three actuarial exams and would really like to continue down this path. How difficult would it be to transition in a year from a Benefits Calculation Administrator to an Actuarial Analyst? Will I be able to keep taking SOA/CAS exams, or would four be too many?

(I haven't had an internship or relevant work experience)

Thanks for your advice!

As of 2011, is cheating/ lying to a sex partner illegal for men?

While some think cheating should not be illegal, often siding with the person wearing the scarlet letter, others have long thought it should be.

http://ift.tt/1Pq4vii

The definition of rape in almost all states requires penetration. That means except in non-typical scenarios, only a man can commit rape.

As of 2011 in most states (general population, not college), rape by deception occurs when a man conceals any fact from his sex partner (who later is enraged when she finds out, since she would not have consented otherwise). The definition of concealment and applicability of the definition is left unrestricted.

So, if a man cheats on his partner, most likely, he will not tell her and even use a different phone. Does that count as concealment? If so, under the law, if he has sex with her afterward, he has raped her. So, it is illegal for him to cheat on her, but not for her to cheat on him. In addition to not cheating, there is the possibility he could be charged if he ever lies about anything, as so many Americans are used to doing. She only must act enraged and say she would not have slept with him had she known he lied to her.

I'm not so concerned about the cheating aspect, but I do have a different intellectual question, about privacy vs consent. This actually parallels workplace privacy of employees vs employer consent for the employee to continue working there. Since the law makes no statement about what topics of lies count, does that mean that all do? Is he in a never ending police interrogation where he can't lie and she can, and failure to answer implies the worse answer, ending all privacy?

I don't think this discussion will appear in the news. Typically the news gets involved when a court case occurs. I doubt one will. If one party has so much power over the other as to be able to throw them in prison for 6 months, then all they need to do is point it out to the weaker party. That party will then obey her every command from then on, negating the need to go to trial and keeping it out of the news. With the exception of Texas, none of the states have a statute of limitations for her to press charges after she finds out about the lie or concealment.

I propose a few restrictions:
For a lie to count as rape, a jury majority must agree that it is a serious lie. Lying he makes much more money than he actual does is serious. Lying he makes less, because he is afraid of "gold diggers", does not hurt her. If the jury thinks the seriousness is borderline, then it must be accompanied by her prefacing the question with the fact that it is important. If the jury thinks the lie only protects privacy and is not harmful, then even her preface should change that.

Issues with Creating Study Schedules

Say you're studying for a big exam and you're scheduling out how long you'll spend for each chapter. Even after doing a bit of research and hearing from others how long certain chapters take, what do you do if you get stuck on a chapter because you find it harder? Do you just study it a bit, move on, and come back to it later if you couldn't figure it out? It's hard to predict which material you will have trouble with.

Exams while interning

I have two questions :

1. Is it awkward to take exam S, which is a CAS exam, while interning at the Life & Health department of a large company that also has a P&C department ?

2. My internship starts at the beginning of May and I'm thinking of taking an exam on May 8. Can I ask to get the exam fee reimbursed or even to get free study material from my future company ?

Thoughts on Individual Claims Reserving Technique

Hi,

I have just started to use ICR method on IBNRs program. Is there anyone who used this program recently? The point is I want to use this method in order to compute IBNR results of our MOD branch. However, since there are salvage and recovery issues in that branch, when I use chain ladder method I can compute negative IBNR results but in the new method it results with positive figures.

What do you think and suggest about this situaton?

Cruz and his kids

Not sure if you guys have seen this or not.....

But Cruz basically used his kids in an attack ad, and a Wapo cartoonist basically lampooned him for it (made the kids into monkeys playing to Cruz's music).

And Cruz basically went Bonkers.

Now Cruz may sound like an absolute imbecile on camera but that is all for show. He is good at the political game and he probably knew somebody would make fun of him including his little kids in a political ad. I think he was basically looking for some PR and he basically found some (not unlike what Trump has been doing).

Any thoughts?
