Recommending A Friend

Happy Friday, Careers! May it be a good one with less shit-posting.

I work on a team of 3 analysts including myself. One (not me) was recently promoted to a manager of a different team. My manager asked if I knew someone who might be interested in taking over that role. I do have a friend from college who has the right skill set we're looking for (SQL, Excel, a personality, etc), but no insurance experience. I'm also pretty sure it would be a big pay increase for him.

I have a few concerns about recommending someone and potentially talking them into taking the job.
  1. He might suck (either he gets the job and does poorly or doesn't get the job because he had a bad interview)
  2. He could hate the work/people even though I like it
  3. He might turn down the offer and I've wasted my manager's time

Anyone have experience recommending a friend from your personal life? How did it go? Is there anything else I should be worried about when giving someone my recommendation? I have a good reputation at work and want to keep it that way. Should I do it or don't do it?
