Clueless in NYC

So I'm that guy who had a sh*tty 4 out of 6 years at an insurance company and is shell-shocked about working. I had a physical condition that prevented me from working for years. Sorry if this post comes off as redundant.

In my previous post, I solicited advice about working in government actuary positions because I heard they were less stressful.

The first job I applied for, I actually got an interview and even a job offer. Except I knew from moment one that I wasn't taking that job when I heard specifics in the interview. Working until 1 AM regularly, managing people, turning on a dime with half hour's notice with work, creating every project from the ground up (no standard work day). The department was only 4 people and strangest of all, none of them were actuaries... So they didn't really understand my past accomplishments of 7 exams and 2 modules.

I asked the SSA, but they don't have any openings right now. I applied with the state for actuaries, but never got a response... So I ran out of places to look (I did look elsewhere).

I've been getting advice to apply to banks or mortgage firms. Throw a wide net of resumes to companies like Google. Does this make sense? Would I have to know what job I'm applying for or just shop around my skills for what they might think suits me? If I work at a bank or something similar, is it in an actuarial capacity?

Someone in the previous thread suggested I need to sell myself and I don't know how that's going to go. As for why I'm shying away from insurance companies it's because of not working for 5 years, having 7 exams passed, by no FSA. Being thrown into a pool of people who are much cheaper and are currently studying the material instead of having forgotten it. I'll probably end up at another insurance company, but until then, I have no idea... Money is not even an issue, although it'd be nice to make more than 30K.

I'll probably be trying my college's career counseling, but I can not ask my friends to help me get an "in" with companies because I'm damaged goods.

Did I really post only 2 months ago? It feels like an eternity.
