Major Changes to Pathway to ASA – SOA Proposal

As has been mentioned in another thread, the SOA has proposed major changes to the pathway to ASA. The SOA Board is expected to vote on the changes at their meeting in June. I think one thing is clear: there will be a significant amount of material added to the ASA curriculum, meaning more exams needed to attain ASA. If you haven’t attained ASA by the implementation date, which is targeted in 2018, then you will have to take extra exams.

If you’re working on MLC at this time, then I think you’ve got a chance to get your ASA before implementation of the changes, but at the same time you don’t have time to take MLC multiple times. I encourage you to consider using Abacus Learning Institute (ALI) resources. Through ALI’s Director of Actuarial Education, Jim Daniel, we have a process that is proven to give results. Over many years of various syllabi for this material, Jim’s pass rate for his face-to-face MLC seminar has been 1.18 times the worldwide pass rate. Folks can debate validity of pass rates all they want, but the fact is that Jim’s pass rate has been 1.18 times the worldwide pass rate.

For MLC, ALI now offers an online course, a west coast face-to-face seminar, and an east coast face-to-face seminar. Our offerings are explained in more detail here. Note that in this referenced post, the east coast face-to-face seminar is listed as being in Atlanta, but there’s a high likelihood that it will take place in Hartford, instead. We should know by the middle of next week, and I will post on the AO when it’s decided. (Note that for Exam C, ALI offers an online fundamentals course and a west-coast face-to-face seminar in Davis, CA, just outside Sacramento. At this time, Jim teaches both of these courses, and over many years of various syllabi, Jim’s pass rate for his face-to-face C seminar has been 1.15 times the worldwide pass rate.)

Something not mentioned in the above referenced post is the structure of our face-to-face seminars. These are 5-day intensive seminars, with the morning session each day devoted to fast-paced lecture on the material, and the afternoon session devoted to problem solving. The first half of the afternoon session will be problem solving by the instructor, whereas the second half of the afternoon session will be problem solving by the participant, with guidance from the instructor. Jim has been using this structure for his face-to-face seminars for 20+ years with outstanding success, as evidenced by his pass rates.

Again, with the proposed changes to the pathway to ASA, if you want to avoid taking additional exams, then it is important to pass MLC (and C) as soon as possible. I strongly believe that we at ALI give you the best chance of doing so. Please visit www.abacusli.com for more information on our offerings. Thanks.

Steve
