Rant: Young People in Business

I'll start off by saying that I'm only 26, but I was just at a lunch meeting with a client where it ranged from manager down to peon (about 4 people from each side). Sure there's the usual small talk not related to business, but by the time the managers were discussing things of importance I couldn't hear what they were saying most of the time because the peons were talking about where they were going drinking this weekend, or what color shirt Bobby was wearing. Do they not understand that this is one of the best places to learn the business? How the interactions go? What certain people's pain points are when talking about marketing the program or changing attachment points? I feel like I missed out on a lot of useful information, not only to use with this client but to use with others that might be in this situation in the future, all because these kids didn't recognize the situation they were in.

This isn't the first time I've noticed this, it's just the most recent. Am I completely off base here, or do other people notice this as well? What's the best way to handle this situation? (apart from not inviting them, I'm not their manager and don't have that luxury.)
