The Opportunity:
The Health Consultant will join an established health benefits consulting practice and lead efforts to grow and serve clients’ health benefits needs in the East region with a special emphasis on wellness management. Incumbent will be a key contributor playing a significant role and being involved in challenging consulting activities including planning, managing and executing client strategies and initiatives. In addition, the Health Consultant will manage project teams and work flow; teams will range from analysts to consultants and may be actuarial and non-actuarial in nature.

The Role:
The Health Consultant consults directly to clients on group health benefit plans, managed care alternatives, and wellness management programs focusing on plan design, pricing, financial, administration and compliance issues. Specific responsibilities include: performing as the lead contact for select clients on group health benefits consulting assignments and in a secondary/support role on select major client relationships as necessary, handling (or supervising) all routine and complex projects in the practice area to include but not limited to: plan design, evaluating/introducing managed care options, writing specifications, coordinating vendor contract bidding situations, analyzing bids, and insurance carrier reasonableness testing; assuming project management accountability for own work and for assignments requiring the supervision of staff on a project basis.

The Consultant effectively plans, budgets, controls and quality assures the timely delivery of high quality work product; effectively builds rapport and collaborative working relationships with colleagues, consultants and client staff; regularly passes on knowledge and skills to colleagues and junior staff members; participates in internal staff training initiatives as required; identifies opportunities to expand work with existing clients and participates in business development/marketing initiatives as needed; actively participates in identifying and attracting junior and consultant level talent to the practice and firm.

Relationship Management: works well with colleagues both in practice area and in other practice disciplines; able to evaluate the skills and attitudes of client personnel; recognizes tactically difficult situations and seeks appropriate help; able to perform as lead or primary consulting contact on select clients.

Project Management: consistently manages own time effectively; requires little supervision; able to scope and plan resource requirements and manage project performance within budget, quality and timing guidelines; supervises more junior staff as required with ability to perform as team leader.

Leadership: regularly works at passing on knowledge and consulting skills to
others; recognized as a good mentor and motivator of junior staff; actively participates in identifying and attracting new talent to the organization.
Business Development: able to identify opportunities for extension on own projects; has potential/interest for developing leads and participating in business development and marketing initiatives.

The Requirements:
The qualified candidate must have; minimum of 10-15 years of group health benefits experience within a consulting, insurance company or health & welfare fund management environment; group benefits knowledge and/or expertise to include all or a combination of medical, dental, life insurance, disability and other related plans (knowledge must be sufficient to affect/influence thought development and assist in making decisions on health plan issues); Public Sector experience or familiarity with Public Sector plans required; demonstrated project management and/or team leadership skills to include project planning, budgeting, controlling, quality assuring, delivering, billing and collecting; demonstrated analytical and financial skills with ability to review/check numeric data for accuracy/completeness and effectively present complex financial information to clients; proficiency in use of software/spreadsheet tools; superb communication (oral/written) skills with ability to present and explain complex subject matter; excellent interpersonal/relationship building skills; cooperative/collaborative work ethic in dealing with colleagues, consultants and clients; ability and interest to participate in mentoring and staff development activities; interest (if not proven ability) to participate in business development and marketing initiatives.
